TAKING ESPECIALLY GOOD CARE OF YOUR TEETH BECOMES EXTRA important when you’re pregnant. Not only are there links between gum disease and premature or smaller babies, but pregnant women often have oral health issues of their own during those long nine months.

While pregnant, women experience more issues with gingivitis and gum problems. Because of hormone changes during pregnancy, the reaction of your gums, and the potential for gingivitis is exaggerated. In addition, gums can become more easily irritated, causing inflammation or bleeding.

Remember that although hormones change the outcome and increase the potential for problems, plaque is still the underlying cause for gingivitis. This means that maintaining proper oral care can significantly reduce any potential problems and constant attention can insure your healthy mouth through your pregnancy.

So, what can you do to keep YOUR oral health, AND your baby’s healthy, through pregnancy? One of the best things is EXACTLY what your obstetrician has probably already advised you about—eating healthy! Consuming foods that are high in sugar can cause plaque and gingivitis for anyone, but the effects can be exaggerated during pregnancy.

Because gingivitis and gum problems can be accelerated during pregnancy, it’s important to keep your regularly scheduled dental checkups to be sure problems don’t arise. The best time for these appointments is during your fourth to sixth months of pregnancy. This window is an important time in the baby’s development. Because of added stress during the last trimester, it is suggested that dental appointments be done before then.

Although it doesn’t work quite so miraculously, sedation dentistry DOES work in much the same way—with results that “feel” (and are) faster.

Sedation dentistry has proven helpful to many of our patients, for a variety of reasons and procedures. Sedation dentistry often helps people feel like their visit lasted only a few minutes—when in fact, it may have lasted for hours.

There are many forms of sedation dentistry. We work with you to determine what’s best for your particular situation. In some cases, sedation can be much like anesthesia during surgery. But more often, sedation doesn’t actually put you completely out. Most patients who choose sedation dentistry are awake, functional, and responsive.

One of the biggest sedation dentistry benefits is that procedures that typically take multiple visits can now be accomplished in one visit—saving you a lot of time, stress, and hassle. Then, I thought about YOU, my valued patients, and how much I appreciate the trust you place in me, in Daniel, and in our team.

I know that many of you are in the early stages of choosing your own career paths—OR, you have children or grandchildren who are making career decisions right now.

Some of the things both Daniel and I love most about being a dentist is the mix between science, management, engineering, and artistry. Each day is different, and we love the challenges.

But most of all, the thing I probably like best, is the opportunity to really help people and to make a difference in their lives. I know it may not seem like much, but the personal fulfillment that comes from helping people feel better about their smile and/or oral health is fantastic. Sometimes “feeling better” means “physically” better (if someone is uncomfortable or in pain). Sometimes “feeling better” means “emotionally” better (such as helping someone have the self confidence to smile again).

Today’s smile design techniques and materials, combined with the artistic skills of dentists like Drs. Jared and Daniel Theurer, make having a drop-dead-gorgeous smile easier and more affordable than ever. If you’re a little unfamiliar with some of the terminology behind smile design, here’s a short course:

• Whitening - Sometimes called “tooth bleaching”, smile whitening is the most common cosmetic dental procedure. While many whitening options are now available—including over the counter products—dentist-supervised treatments remain the recommended procedures for lightening discolored teeth.
• Contouring - Contouring is sometimes called “tooth reshaping”. Contouring can sometimes be used to correct minimally crooked teeth, chipped teeth, cracked teeth or an overlapping tooth. It’s a procedure of subtle changes and is commonly used to alter the length, shape or position of teeth.
• Bonding - Bonding is a process in which enamel-like dental composite materials are applied to a tooth’s surface, then sculpted into shape and polished.
• Veneers - Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly teeth. They’re an option for closing gaps or disguising discolored teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures. Sometimes, tooth reduction may be necessary.
• Minimal Prep Veneers - The popularity of prepless veneers is being driven in part by increased patient desire to prevent removal of healthy tooth structure. But not all cases are right for minimal-prep veneers.

YES, THE TOPIC OF “DENTAL SEALANTS” IS ABOUT AS EXCITING AS IT SOUNDS

Dr. Jared and Dr. Daniel both recommend using sealants as preventive dental care for children. Children’s teeth have small depressions and grooves, making it harder to properly clean them with brushing alone. Sealants create a protection in these small depressions and grooves, keeping plaque from being able to form in the small crevices. Even though it’s ideal to get sealants as a child, adults can also be good candidates for dental sealants.

Sealants are applied during a very short visit here at Theurer Family Dental. After your teeth are perfectly cleaned and prepped, the sealing solution is painted directly on the tooth surfaces. A curing light is then used to harden the sealant. After the sealant is hardened you’re on your way—no need to wait to eat or drink. Routine dental checkups will allow Dr. Jared and Dr. Daniel to keep tabs on your sealants, making sure they’re in good condition.

Most insurance companies cover sealants, and the procedure lasts around 10 years—making one application last from childhood into adulthood. So what’s the connection between our dental practice and our salt water fish tank? Well, here’s what we think…

We have a waiting room (actually, people rarely have to do much “waiting” but traditionally, that’s what it’s called). On rare occasions, something unexpected may come up and one of our valued patients may have to wait for a minute or two. There are also some people who feel just a little bit nervous when they come to the dentist.

Dr. Jared and Dr. Dan want every patient to feel as comfortable as possible. So one of our ideas was to install a beautiful fish tank full of tropical fish so you can pretend you’re on a beach in Hawaii instead of a dental office in Salt Lake City.
